Radiation
Oncology at Clara Maass
Medical Center
The
Radiation Oncology Department is part of the Cancer Center at Clara Maass
Medical Center, which is accredited by the American College of Surgeons
Commission on Cancer as a comprehensive hospital cancer program.
Radiation oncologists offer
their patients a spectrum of state-of-the-art cancer services. Besides the newly
installed ACQSIM, a CT-based virtual simulator that enables physicians to view
tumors in three dimensions for precise targeting of treatment sites, other
equipment includes two linear accelerators that produce cancer fighting
radiation; a simulator to map out two-dimensional areas of treatment; and a
three-dimensional mapping system that guides physicians in targeting treatment
sites.
High
dose rate radiation, used to treat cancers of the uterus, lung and esophagus, as
well as other sites, was introduced at Clara Maas in 1998. The department also
runs a very active prostate cancer radioactive seed implant program.
Patients
receive compassionate and comprehensive family-centered care provided by a team
of experts from every field, including physicians; nurses; social workers;
dieticians; discharge planners; and pastoral care representatives. Home health
nursing care, hospice services and a wide range of support groups are also
available.
In
1998, Clara Maas was the first hospital in the state of New Jersey to receive a
seal of approval from the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO). The
hospital received high marks in the caliber of physicians, policies and
procedures, equipment, treatment measures, facilities and growth plans.
