Patient Education and Emotional Support
The Radiation Oncology Staff is dedicated to keeping patients informed and involved in their treatment regimen. Throughout your visits, you will find physicians, radiation therapists, and nurse specialists available to answer your questions.
Many patients are concerned about potential side effects from radiation therapy. Side effects, if any, are often determined by the type of illness and corresponding treatment plan. If you have concerns or are experiencing side effects, please talk to your nurse or radiation therapist. “Supportive Care Cards” that describe the side effect are available, along with a list of helpful hints to minimize any discomfort you may be experiencing.
A serious illness can arouse unfamiliar and even frightening emotions. It is not unusual for some individuals to experience fear, confusion, anxiety, sadness, loneliness or anger. It may be difficult to sleep or concentrate. Many patients also describe feeling “out of control” as their usual day-to-day routines are disturbed and they must fit in treatment regimens that place additional demands on their time and resources. Saint Barnabas offers counseling services for patients who wish to share their concerns. An oncology counselor is available by appointment by calling (973) 322-2668. In addition, a brochure is available listing a wealth of our Cancer Center-sponsored support groups and educational workshops. Almost all of these services are available free of charge. Feel free to ask for a copy of our brochure at any time during your treatment.
