Radiation Oncology at The Frederick B. Cohen, MD, Comprehensive Cancer and Blood Disorder Center at
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center

Newark Beth Israel is a 669-bed teaching hospital, and is a leader in field of cancer treatment. For years, the institution has been one of the highest enrollers of patients on to clinical trials, offering patients the most state-of -the-art treatment options in the country.

The department of radiation oncology provides the highest quality of care to its patients. As a member of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the Children's Cancer Study Group- prestigious national organizations dedicated to the advancement of cancer care, the department is constantly adding newer and better treatment options, with the goal of improving chances of cure while reducing long-term side effects.

Working closely with surgeons, medical oncologists and physicians from every specialty, the treatment of cancer is a multidisciplinary effort. A major part of the department is brachytherapy, i.e. the delivery of radiation by placing sources in or near the tumor bed. The radiation oncology department is one of only a few of its kind in New Jersey that offer high dose rate (HDR) therapy for all sites of cancer.

Along with outstanding physicians and technical staff comes our ability to deliver radiation with the highest level of precision. Our new Tomotherapy unit, one of only a few in the state, gives physicians the opportunity to avoid normal tissue that may be surrounding the cancer. Then, the doctor can focus higher doses of radiation on the tumor, and do so safer than has ever been possible in the past.

Dedicated nursing, nutritional counseling and social work are all part of the multidisciplinary cancer care provided at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
