Dr. Robert Ivker,
the Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Ivker joined the department in 1996. Prior to coming to Newark Beth Israel, Dr. Ivker was an attending physician at Community Medical Center an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.

Dr. Ivker did his training at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City where he served as Chief Resident in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He received his Medical degree from the University of Des Moines, College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Ivker has made clinical research and patient access to state-of-the-art cancer treatments his highest priority. The Department of Radiation Oncology at Newark Beth Israel is one of a select few in the state of New Jersey that is affiliated with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) through its relationship with Thomas Jefferson University. Due to this affiliation the department has access to the most up to date and most promising "cutting edge" treatment protocols, designed to explore new methods of treatment. The goal of these protocols is simple, increase the chance of cure while reducing the risk of side effects.

The department has a similar affiliation with the Children's Cancer Study Group (CCSG), making it one of the only departments in New Jersey to hold dual affiliations. All patients treated on protocol have their treatment plans undergo professional peer review by a panel of experts at either RTOG or CCSG headquarters.

Brachytherapy, or the introduction of radioactive sources into the body, is a cornerstone of the department. As a member of the American Brachytherapy Society, Dr. Ivker has brought new techniques and treatments to the department which are unavailable at most radiation oncology facilities in New Jersey. This includes High-Dose Rate radiation for prostate cancer, a therapy which builds on the advantages gained with traditional seeding. But be it, lung, gynecologic, breast, or any other form of cancer all patients are evaluated to see if brachytherapy should play a role in their treatment.

Dr. Ivker is a member of The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO), American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO), as well as other professional societies. He has and continues to present his work on head and neck, breast, and prostate cancer at national and international meetings. Recently, a chapter on gastrointestinal malignancies (gastric and pancreas) that Dr. Ivker co-authored was published in a textbook for other physicians. He is Board certified by the American Board of Radiology for the practice of Radiation Oncology and is consistently recognized as performing "the first of its kind" procedures in the state. Caring nursing and dedicated healthcare professionals round out a compassionate, multidisciplinary team approach to cancer patients and their families.
